Help boost your sales even further, please read on –
One major factor that can effect how much money you make is how much postage and packing you have to pay to get stock delivered to you in the first place, on average most places will charge around £10 to deliver the goods by courier, there are a few ways around this.
The first is to look for suppliers that are close to home so you can arrange to collect the goods in person, most wholesalers don’t actually have a shop as such, but will usually arrange a time over the phone where you can visit their warehouse/factory and view stock before purchasing.
The second is to only buy bigger quantities of stock, therefore making the cost of delivery for each individual item lower = MORE PROFIT UPON RESALE.
You can also try to get a deal out of your suppliers once you become established and become a regular supply of income for them, the main thing to consider is that most people (ebay traders and wholesalers alike) will look to make a profit on the postage and packing aswell as the actual product they sell so beware of paying over the going rate.
As a general rule if the postage and packing is more than 20% of the overall value of your goods its probably not worth it as you will struggle to sell the goods at a high enough price to be able to cover the cost.
When purchasing items it is worth trying to stick to brand names – GAP/Next seem to be best sellers – and you can pick up ex –GAP/Next items from around £2. A name that buyers know will give people an idea of the quality they will be getting and will help to sell the item.
So you have got some stock – now to the selling.
Always take a good photo in a bright room against a light back ground like a white sheet to make the item stand out.
When putting items on sale try to make them finish in the evening between eight to ten o clock, for children’s items anyday is good for other items try making them finish on a weekend night if possible, you can schedule when you want items to start/finish although this will make the listing fee higher so try to enter them on at a time that will allow you to start selling them straight away e.g. if you are putting an item on for a 7 day sale do it on a Wednesday evening to finish the following week at the same time.
Try not to put items on for less than 7 days, although it is unlikely you will receive any offers until the last few days it gives your product the chance for people to see it and start watching the item with a view to bidding towards the end of the auction.
Try to avoid using the buy it now auctions as for many people half the appeal of using sites like ebay is the thrill of the chase and seeing how the auction pans out, you can control the price of your goods just as effectively by setting the starting bid at a price that would see you make a small profit on the item and will encourage potential buyers to become involved in your auction. Your can subsidise your profit by charging a fee for postage and packing that will see you make a profit on that aswell.
As a general rule your pricing should be very competitive with similar items on the site if not slightly lower.
For children’s clothing you would be looking to make 20-25% profit on the item and the same again on postage. You should also a charge a fixed sum for the fee that paypal will take when the item is paid for by the buyer (usually worked out a small percentage of the transaction)
E.g. Next baby grow – You but at £2
Add 20p for paypal fees
You sell at £2.70 = 50p profit
First class post = 90p approx
Packing materials = 20p
Charge £1.50 postage = 40p profit
= 90p profit
Now, 90p does not sound a lot but if you can get to the stage where you are selling 5+ items a day – very achievable thats £30 a week or £120 a month which is good for something that is very easy and can be done with only a few hours each week. Obviously if you want to work a bit harder you can earn more – the choice is yours!
Try to increase you profit by selling more items rather than charging more for them as people on ebay want a bargain and will run a mile if they think you are trying to rip them off. Also when thinking of how attractive an item is to buyers think about how much it will cost them in total i.e. including postage and packing – can you honestly say it’s a good deal for them – if not reduce the price and don’t be greedy.
Once your item has sold your next job begins and you start to earn your feedback, which is vital to show people you are trustworthy and are worth buying items from.
Once the item has finished and the buyer has paid – send them an e-mail thanking them for the payment and advising them when you will be posting their item and when they can expect to receive it – try to post the item with 24hrs if possible as the buyer will be impressed by your superfast delivery, if you can only get to post office on certain days try to ensure you auctions finish close to these days to avoid buyers having to wait excessively long times for their goods to arrive.
When packaging your items ensure that they are well sealed and will not be damaged in transit - try using mail sacks – they can be purchased off ebay at reasonable prices, are a lot quicker than wrapping paper for you to package goods up and are a lot more durable.
Address labels can be printed directly off the e-mail you will receive from paypal when you get paid and will save you a lot of time manually typing or writing addresses. It also cuts down on the potential for mistakes.
Packaging up items to post is the most tedious part of the process so its worth spending the time to try and devise methods to cut down on how long this takes – such as using mail sacks.
Then just post the items and wait for the positive feedback to comeback.
P.S. Always get receipts when you post things, as it will provide both you and your buyer with some proof if something did go astray in the post.
From time to time we all make mistakes but be honest and do your best to put things right if anything does go wrong and the buyers will usually be quite understanding if they think you are doing your all you can.
One final pointer is that there will be things that just will not sell. Don’t get too frustrated and keep putting them back on ebay indefinitely as the listing fees will mean that they end up costing you money to sell, instead every so often think about doing a car boot sale – you can often get better prices there than you would get on ebay anyway as there is less competition - but there is a lot more hassle involved in the setting up a stall etc.
